Nicaragua Mission Trip (finally!)
Here are some Nicaragua pictures. Some of them are mine and some are Emily's. I got back on Sunday night but I've pretty much been working all the time. I barely have time to spend with my grandparents who are already here. But yea, if anyone wants me to send them a link that takes you to all of my nicaragua pictures, then just leave a message and let me know. Basically those 8 days there were one of the best of my life. I got really close to the people in the village and I also got really close to the other students who went on the trip (most of them go to the University of Georgia). I feel so lucky and blessed that I was able to go on this trip and experience so many great things and see a side of life that I never get to see. Even though it was hard at times to see so much suffering, hunger, and poverty, it was the most rewarding thing to give a little kid a hug and see them smile or to walk around the village and have people come out of their "champas" and greet you. I'll always treasure all the memories I have from this trip, everything from playing with the kids (especially Juan and Jemmy) to climbing the volcano, to all the laughs I shared with my 5 roommates, to my Greyhound adventure, to my experience at the beach with 10 dogs and a thunderstorm, and even the machete lessons I got from the villagers. I know I'll be back one day, I just hope it's soon because service is one of the most rewarding things you can do in life. I <3 Nicaragua and everyone who went on the trip (especially my room 6 girls). ( Read more... ) | | Friday, May 27th, 2005 | | 10:42 am |
Wow i have the day off today. Mainly I just wanted to say that yes i´m still alive and everything is fine here in Nicaragua. I have so much to share and so far my experience has been one of them most memorable experiences of my life. This trip has opened my eyes and has helped me see poverty at its worst but God at his best (both through us and through the villagers). Cinthia just tell mom and dad to stop worrying so much! But yea, I´m fine just hanging out with Debbie here in Chinandega cause she needed me to translate for her on her errands. Everyone else is in Leon planting tomatoes on a farm haha so they are so jealous of me. I won´t tell them that I got to come to an internet cafe though. The only thing is that I wish I could stay two more weeks but because of mom´s bday I can´t. One day I´ll be back, I promised all my kids I would. Oh yea, I should be back in Orlando on Monday so anyone who wants to hear my stories just give me a call. I have a lot to tell. much love from nicaragua, NATALIA p.s. these two kids from villa catalina, juan and jemmy stole my heart! i had to say goodbye to them yesterday and it was a very difficult thing to do. One day when they´re older I´m going to hook them up! haha | | Thursday, May 19th, 2005 | | 9:20 pm |
Sooooo I leave tomorrow. The day is finally here. I'm taking the Greyhound bus to Atlanta, where I'm finally going to meet everyone else who is going on the mission trip. We should be arriving in Managua, Nicaragua at 11:33 am on Saturday. I'll be back in Orlando on May 30th, but I might have to work that day. I'll try to post pictures when I get back and get them developed. So yea, just wanted to say that I'm leaving. Oh and today was goodbye. :( Until next time. | | Tuesday, April 26th, 2005 | | 1:35 am |
Wow today has been so crazy. I woke up early to study. Took my Calculus final at 3pm. Had smoke coming out of my brains by the time I was done with my final at 5. Rushed over to church and made it on time for mass. Was hoping to say goodbye to Father Tim but he wasn't there. Went back to room, checked grades and I was two questions from getting an A, which means I'll just have to settle for a B+. Started packing all my crap. Then went out to eat with Diana and Cassie at Olive Garden (I don't blame Stellina for not going, but Jessica kinda forgot about us). It was my first time at Olive Garden, the food was good. Then went to Wal-mart to buy Stellina some of her favorite things like Rice Krispies and Popcorn because well long story but she was sad. Then kept packing, got EVERYTHING in my car, and here I am, about to go to sleep. I have such a long day ahead of me tomorrow..get up early and study for my final, take it at 10 am, rush to Orlando after that, and hopefully make it to Sea World by 2pm. Anyway, as we were packing today and I gave Cassie, Stellina, and Diana some things I had bought for them so they remember me in the summer and we were all like aww this is so sad we don't want to leave. Like a weird but nice roommate bonding moment. I also ran into Jack, this really really really old man (and student) who we met at Gator Nights a while ago. He told us he was a writer and he basically told us his life story. I'll never forget, it was so funny (It was me, Diana, Cassie, and Jessica). And I never thought I'd see him again but I did and he remembered us. Old people are really cool. And when I say he's old, I mean he's old! Jennifer, I'm really sorry my phone is retarded. I'll call you tomorrow when I'm in Orlando because it actually works when I'm there. Good luck on your finals. | | Sunday, April 24th, 2005 | | 2:07 pm |
Last night was awesome. I had my chem final though at 5:30, and that sucked so bad. It was really hard and I basically guessed the whole thing but I'm praying it was enough for a B. After that, I guess I was just relieved that I had survived the whole thing, so I went over to Maria Andrea's place and ate dinner with some people. Then we came back to campus and went to this Colombian Student Association thing. It was like a dinner/social/dance. There was a bunch of us from St.A's there. Raul finally made me dance with him so I guess I gave in to the peer pressure. haha I think Will took pictures. But it was a lot of fun and it had nothing to do with studying which is good. Then Jessica decided to come over at like 1 something and we made Ramen noodles. Today I woke up early to go to Mass with Diana and Cassie and her friends. Bad thing is now I'm gonna go study with Barrett but we just came back from Broward Dining so I want to take a nap. Tomorrow is my calc final. I hope I survive that too. Also got my work schedule. I start Tuesday at 2 (and have a final at 10 am over here, I hope I make it), work Wednesday, Thursday, then Friday come back here for my last final, and then I work again Saturday. Craziness! Samantha, I get out of work at 8pm on Tuesday so let me know what you're doing on your birthday. | | Friday, April 22nd, 2005 | | 1:13 pm |
cansado de andarte buscando ven a encontrarme
I know I've said this a lot, but Ricardo Arjona rocks my socks. I even like Galeria Caribe now ::gasp:: Next concert he has in the U.S., I'm there! Por ti, descubro lo poco que queda de mí si me voy es por ti si me quedo es igual si vivo es que muero por ti cada paso que doy cada pez en el mar todo tiene sentido por ti incluso lo poco que queda de mí Dang I would marry RA. Too bad he's like 40. | | Thursday, April 21st, 2005 | | 12:50 am |
hugs not drugs
Holy crap tonight was awesome. Picked up Viviana and we went to help set up Fernando's surprise party at Margaret's apt. Fernando is this really cool kid, he's an exchange student from Spain, and he's leaving the first week of May. We were all so excited waiting for him to get there, and when he did, we all jumped out of nowhere and surprised him. It was great. We played Taboo, it was so much fun. I had never played that game before, I kinda suck at it though. One of my words was bust. haha. At least I didn't get G string or thong or exotic like some people did. Then everybody started dancing and for the first time in my life I wish I could (well second time, friday counts). Made me think of Yoshi. But anyway, as weird as it is, Carlos is going to give me dancing lessons in the fall, since I won't be here in the summer. Yes that's freaky. But it was awesome, and everyone was taking pictures with their 895 megapixel zoom red eye reduction super expensive cannon fujifilm digital cameras and I took some with my 35mm one. But eventually I'll get those developed. Then me and Carlos left early because I had to go pick up Diana at Tutoring Zone. Yep that's it. I'm gonna miss these kids in the summer... | | Wednesday, April 20th, 2005 | | 12:15 pm |
I just wanted to say that yesterday was awesome because I got a lot of free food. Ben and Jerrys had their free ice cream day, so we went in the afternoon but the line was so long that we decided to go back later. Then we went to Newman Club, and it was BBQ day. So we got to eat free burgers, hot dogs, cake, etc. After that we stopped by Ben and Jerrys and got our free ice cream. Then at 11 me and Jessica went back to Ben and Jerrys to get free ice cream again (Yes, we're pigs) and it turns out Dominos Pizza was also giving out free slices. And we did end up getting our free ice cream again (we were like the last people to get it last night). So yes, all that food for free. Free stuff is exciting. | | Tuesday, April 19th, 2005 | | 2:47 pm |

I AM NOW THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE PRO-LIFE ALLIANCE!!!!!!! I am so so so happy about this. I've never been an officer for anything in my life, and I know it's going to take a lot of work and commitment starting now, but I am willing to do it. I know next year is going to be so exciting because me and Kate (the new president) are on the same page and there's so many things we want to do. So the new officers are: President: Kate VP: Natalia Treasurer: Barrett Secretary: Jenny Historian: Betsy Our website is www.grove.ufl.edu/~prolife if anyone cares to see... | | Thursday, April 7th, 2005 | | 3:12 pm |
It's pouring outside with thunder and lightning and who knows what else because I'm too scared to look out. I had a class at 1:55, so I went, turned in my paper, told the teacher I had to go somewhere (hey she said thats ok we weren't doing anything important anyway), and RAN back to my room just in time before it got really bad. Good thing I don't have to leave until 7ish. RxBandits are going to be playing for free at the Reitz tonight, I don't really like them but I'll go if the PLA meeting doesn't take forever. Anyway, Tuesday I went to Newman Club with Diana and Cassie and it was the best taco salad I have ever had. I had seconds and brought back thirds for the next day. We visited Celeste at the computer lab afterwards. Yesterday was pretty hectic, I had so much work. Finally having an actual conversation with someone made me really happy. I went to all three of my classes in the morning/afternoon, then did work until lab at 6pm. Got out of lab a little early at 8:30, and then headed over to Betsy's apartment for our weekly discussion thingy, I don't know what to call it. It was fun, we talked about the devout life, but I always feel stupid because they use big words and I always have to ask what they mean. Then Glen played like every single Creed song on my guitar as if it were the easiest thing to do. I probably looked like the little kid at Christmas who got what he or she always wanted. I came back dead at like 12 and I listened to Creed for about an hour. Yea, I'm a dork. And it's still pouring... | | Tuesday, April 5th, 2005 | | 4:31 pm |

Ok so I've been meaning to update for a while but I've been so busy. School sucks but it's almost over. I went to Orlando last weekend for Cinthia's birthday. I didn't do much Friday because I wanted to just sit and stare at the wall, and that's what I did except I stared at the tv. Saturday was weird. First the pope died, next thing I know I got a speeding ticket (it's ironic because now that I don't speed, I get a ticket, and when I did speed, nothing happened) and it wasn't my fault at all. I was taking my parents van and putting gas in it because my mom was busy and since I'm not used to driving the van, and its way more sensitive than my car, I got stopped....in my neighborhood! Plus I knew the cop was there too. He could've easily given me a warning, since it was my first time and since he said that if i had been going 1 mph less, he wouldn't have stopped me. I mean really, luck hasn't been on my side at all lately. But after that I had one of the best conversations ever with one of my sister's friends about her abortion. She said "I wish I had met you sooner because then I probably wouldn't have gone through with it." Lately I've been making connections with people, it's awesome. So then me and Yoshi slept together haha. Next day I woke up early, and the whole time change did not help, and I came back because me and Diana were supposed to go see a play. Again luck wasn't on my side because I forgot that the time on my phone hadn't changed, so yep we were late. They didn't let us in until intermission meaning we missed almost all of it, and I have no idea what it was about. If anyone knows what "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is about, please let me know. Then on Sunday night me and Jessica decided to go out for a walk from like 12 to 2 am. We walked to the Reitz. Probably one of the most random things I've done this year. She is my chica de casa though. And yes, that was my weekend. Jennifer stopped by yesterday, It was good seeing her. I also went to CSF with Helena and then to a memorial for the Pope. A little while ago I went to ask my Calc professor why I had gotten 3 wrong on the last test if I had really only gotten 2 wrong. Then we figured out that the correct answer to a question was b) c=something, and instead of marking b on the scantron, I got confused and marked c. So If it turns out that I'm 5 points short of an A in that class at the end of the semester, I'm going to be mad. Ok well, I have to go to class. Then I'm going to Newman with Diana and Cassie because they're serving tacos!!!! yay for tacos...last time they were so good. And lastly, I did watch Napoleon Dynamite again and hated it even more. Sorry guys. | | Monday, April 4th, 2005 | | 12:13 am |

RIP Pope John Paul II "From the start, Pope John Paul II has labored to keep the Church faithful to its tradition and to the teaching and spirit of Vatican Council II, while positioning it to meet the challenges of the third millennium. He is a staunch defender of the sanctity of human life — “from conception to natural death,” he often says — and of marriage and the family. Opposition to totalitarianism and support for human rights make this activist, long-reigning pope a major figure on the world political scene. He is the most-traveled pope in history. Through Sept. 2004, he had covered over 750,000 miles during 103 pastoral visits outside Italy, over 144 within Italy, and over 300 to the parishes of Rome. In all, he has visited 133 countries and has held talks with 850 heads of state or government. Certainly he is the pope most prolific in literary output, having issued by his 84th birthday (May 2004) 14 encyclicals, 14 apostolic exhortations, 11 apostolic constitutions, 43 apostolic letters and 28 motu proprio." Quotes from the Pope: "The cemetery of the victims of human cruelty in our century is extended to include yet another vast cemetery, that of the unborn." "As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes the whole world in which we live." "The great danger for family life, in the midst of any society whose idols are pleasure, comfort and independence, lies in the fact that people close their hearts and become selfish." "The vow of celibacy is a matter of keeping one's word to Christ and the Church. a duty and a proof of the priest's inner maturity; it is the expression of his personal dignity." "To maintain a joyful family requires much from both the parents and the children. Each member of the family has to become, in a special way, the servant of the others." | | Thursday, March 31st, 2005 | | 10:14 pm |
Umm... Today was extremely hot. Me and Jessica went to play tennis and I basically ended up running up to the fountain and taking a shower there. haha. Also went to Pro-Life Alliance meeting, and I am now considering running for office in the club. It would be so exciting to be an officer, I just don't want to run against any of my friends, that's kinda weird. After the meeting, me and Kate went to St.A's where we met up with a bunch of other people to pray the rosary for Terri and the Pope. It was very nice. I hope Terri could hear us. Now I just got back and Jessica is going to come over so we can all watch Napoleon Dynamite. Yes kids, I'm going to give it another shot to see if I like it. Just one more chance. And tomorrow is Friday. yay. | | 12:05 pm |
RIP Terri Schaivo
Matt just sent this email out to the gators for terri listserve: Father Frank Pavone (Priests for Life) was with the Schindlers during their final visit. He said, "This is not only a death with all the sadness that brings, this is a killing. And for that we not only grieve that Terri has passed, but we grieve that our nation has allowed such an atrocity as this, and we pray that it will never happen again." Theresa Marie Schiavo 3 December 1963 - 31 March 2005 On a better note, last night was good. Went to Betsy's place after lab and had a little bible study thing with her, Glen, and Pam. It was good. I just finished my paper that's due in an hour, and after class I'm going to play tennis with my chica de casa Jessica. Tonight there's a Pro-Life Alliance Meeting, and I'm sure there will be plenty of discussion considering what happened today. Ok that's it, I mainly just wanted to say RIP Terri. | | Sunday, March 27th, 2005 | | 8:11 pm |
This weekend was awesome. Went to Orlando with Diana, Stellina, Jessica, and Cassie. I saw a lot of cool people, including Yoshi, Ryan the birthday boy, Samantha, Ruby, Sarah, Reggie, and the rest of the Kraken people, Ryan, Adriana, Robert, and Leilani. Jessica recorded a song in a studio in Downtown Disney. I'll burn a copy to anyone who wants it. She seriously has the best voice I've ever heard. Now we're watching Alice in Wonderland. Here are some pictures. ( Read more... ) | | Sunday, March 20th, 2005 | | 1:14 pm |
Just wanted to quickly say that I finally got my haircut today (about 12 inches off). I don't think it's ever been this short (I can barely put it up), but I like it. When Diana and Stellina get back I'm sure they're going to want to take an "after" picture since they made me take a "before" picture when I left. I might post it, depending on how lazy I feel. Have a nice day. |
